Safety Tips for Children with Special Needs
Injury is the leading cause of death in children older than one year of age. In 2001, more than 5,500 children ages 1 – 14 died from unintentional injuries. In addition, each year more than 92,000 children are permanently disabled. Children who have chronic illnesses such as diabetes, asthma and seizures are at the same risk for injury as other children. Unfortunately, children with disabilities in cognitive, emotional or social limitations have higher risks of injury than their peers.
Each family’s situation is unique and each child has his or her own challenges. We encourage you to seek guidance from a medical specialist or injury prevention professional if you have questions that are not addressed in this book.
