Health and Medical Services

Health care services may be provided when a person needs specialized health care services directly related to, or the direct result of, a developmental disability, and the care is required to protect health or safety or to prevent regression. These services include specialized medical, dental, nursing, nutritional or pharmaceutical services. Durable medical equipment that may be provided includes those mechanical, assistive or adaptive devices which are designed to sustain life or to facilitate mobility, communication, community access or environmental control in order to promote increased independence. Wheelchairs, apnea monitors and communication devices are examples of durable medical equipment. Non-durable medical equipment and supply services that may be provided include those expendable products which are designed to assist an individual to maintain optimal health and to promote maximum adaptive functioning such as prescription medication, eyeglasses, diapers, hearing aids, and orthopedic shoes.
